Hockey has extreme parity compared to other sports. Goaltender performance creates massive variance — a hot backup can steal a game from any favorite. Special teams (power play and penalty kill) can swing outcomes in minutes. And the shootout element means any team can win on any night, which is why moneyline underdogs in the NHL win about 42-44% of the time.
The AI analyzes 7 weighted factors: team ranking, recent form, goaltender metrics, home ice advantage, special teams (PP% and PK%), expected goals (xGF%), and market odds. Games where the AI assigns 50-60% win probability to either side are toss-ups with genuine upset value.
An Upset Alert badge means the AI picks a team that is not the puck line favorite to win outright. This indicates the model sees enough statistical edge in the underdog’s favor to disagree with market consensus. In hockey, these alerts are more common than in other sports due to high parity.
Goaltending is the single biggest variable in hockey. A backup goaltender for the favorite or a hot starter for the underdog can swing win probability by 10-15%. The AI tracks save percentage trends and adjusts predictions when goaltender data is available. Late goalie confirmations can create value windows for underdog bets.
